The Electricity Story

Hydroelectricity has been dwelling in the center of the economy as well as politics of bhutanese. More in the recent times, it has aggravated more than we can imagine.

Some environmentalists and experts who guards trees and animals are seeming to scream their stand. I am sad at how people see hydroelectricity. Foresters seem to love fishes and birds more than money but sadly some of them are non vegetarian.

Our constitution, that Bhutan shall be protected with 60% of forest cover supports philosophy of development based on Gross National Happiness.  Developing of hydroelectricity has been absolutely raising the arms of protecting environment and in no way it has been against any kind of environmental disaster. Some people have even began to tag the hydro-projects has the doom-strike of our nation which is very scary to burst out in the small society like ours where there are countable ears and eyes.

It has come to a time where we all should realize and think back what Chukha, Basochhu, Tala and Kurichhu has been doing to the nation. We all should get into the real shoes and analyze the investment patterns and returns that we have harvested. We all should know how the economy of our country has been driven by the production of electricity since three decades back. We should know how many golds and diamonds we have sold.

I think, we should not be like, the power plants should get shut down. I don't know what would be our nation like if some of you who are against, was in that period of decision makers. Probably we would still have been with Meb Chi or Mom Bathi. Electricity has been the miracle of the modern world which the kids would seek as their fundamental need like they suck the milk out of mother's breast. It has been the energy which is green at a very large scale and abundantly feasible.

To all those who thinks about not building a hydro electricity, go yourself for retreat to some hot Indian cities, expose in heat and you will find the small fan playing a major role of GNH.
